BANGI: Malaysia will be hosting the prestigious Global Summit of Women (GSW) for the first time, said Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.
The three-day summit, themed “Women: Creating New Economies”, will be held from June 6 to June 8 and is expected to attract over 1,000 delegates from 70 countries, including top leaders from business, government and civil society.
It is expected to be opened by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
Rosmah, who is chairman for this year’s summit, said Malaysia had won the bid in 2011. “The summit will provide a platform for women to discuss strategies and learn about best practices worldwide.
“It will also enable participants to get to know the Malaysian market better while exploring networking and business opportunities.
“The summit will also have a multiplier effect on the economy including tourism,” she said at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia after speaking at the Women Legacies Forum, a prelude to the summit yesterday.
Among those present at the forum were MCM Holdings AG (South Korea) founder andchairman Sung Joo Kim, Iceland’s former Environment Minister Jonina Bjartmarz, and MS READ (Malaysia) founder and managing director Helen Read.
GSW president Irene Natividad said the summit would focus on practical outcomes and solutions. “This year’s theme underscores the reality that women are an economic global force,” she added.
Malaysia, Natividad added, was chosen as host given its 6% economic growth rate, wealth of talent and for legally mandating that 30% of board seats be held by women.
Earlier, Rosmah encouraged university students to explore entrepreneurship. “It is time you think about creating your own job and also jobs for others. You may not do it at graduation but at some point in your life.”
